New iPhone software unveiled

Apple has given a preview of new software for its iPhone which will offer users more than 100 extra features.

Owners of iPhone and iPod Touch devices will be able to cut, copy and paste information for the first time when the third version of the operating software becomes available this summer.

They will also be able to search their files and applications just by typing a key word or phrase into a box on the home screen, set parental controls on access to TV shows and movies, and automatically log in at WiFi hot spots.

Picture messaging has also been added, as well as the ability to record "voice memos" while users are out and about.

The iPhone - a combined iPod, mobile phone and internet browser - already features a high-speed internet connection and GPS satellite positioning.

But users will soon be able to follow "turn by turn" routes through Google maps - effectively turning their devices into sat navs - through a software tool allowing developers to create the function.

Apple has released the maps tool in a limited launch of the software to the industry, so that engineers can create new applications for the devices.

Developers will also be able to offer subscription content and sell new material and features in a "simple and secure" process, Apple said.

Philip Schiller, senior vice president of Apple's worldwide product marketing, said the "major" software release would benefit both iPhone customers and developers.

The software will be free to iPhone owners, but will cost iPod Touch owners 9.95 dollars (around £7) to download. UK prices will be announced in the future.

Some confusion this week over a number of reports that Microsoft is readying a touchscreen 'Surface 2' PC, with Microsoft reps quick to publish a denial that such a machine is being developed.

"Clearing up the confusion on future Microsoft Surface," reads the post on the official Surface blog.

"There's been some buzz in the media this week about the next version of Microsoft Surface and I'd like to clarify a couple of things. The Microsoft Research project Second Light is not the next version of Microsoft Surface," reads the post.

What is Second Light?

"It's an awesome research project out of Microsoft Research in Cambridge that showcases the possibilities of the surface computing platform."

Microsoft wants to focus on Surface and not dilute the message with chatter about the next version of Surface PC. Mainly because the company is currently focused on "bringing Microsoft Surface to commercial customers in the US, Canada and select EMEA markets".

Plus, in typically bullish fashion, the post on the Microsoft Surface blog adds: "The current product is amazing enough that we're not looking at melting your brain just yet."
